August 2005 Camper Newsletter

Here we go again with a summary of the events so far this month.  I am writing about the campouts at the Archie Pate Picnic and the Official Visitation to Southeast Shrine Club at the Jernigan Ranch near Willcox.

ARCHIE PATE--- This is an annual event (FIRST WEEKEND OF AUGUST) includes a roasting event to “honor” the Chief Rabban.  This year one of the Club’s own members was roasted (Glenn Davis).  The campers at the event were Boazs, Engdahls, James, Johnsons, new member Jim Jones, Moose and Robbie, and the Pritchards who were there during Friday and Saturday but camping in a Sierra Vista Hotel.  The campers had a great time both evenings and really enjoyed the picnic and the Roasting. As always, the expertise of the members was needed to help a member.  Jim Jones was getting familiar with his rig and could not get his generator to power up the inside equipment.  This was a similar problem that Charlie Alder had on his new rig.  The “problem” turned out to be that the power chord must be plugged into the generator in order to have the inside equipment powered up.  Problem solved without tearing up Jim’s rig and taking hours of discussion.  At our meeting the members decided that a change in the schedule was needed.  As a result, the October Campout will be the last weekend of October.   This means that we will be camping at Patagonia Lake on Halloween Weekend and will be decorating the area with pumpkins, spiders, witches, and all that stuff.  MARK YOUR SCHEDULES NOW so you can attend!

JERNIGAN RANCH VISITATION--- August 19, 20,& 21  This annual event is hosted by Lee and Marte Jernigan at the site of the family’s original homestead near mile post 13 on route 266 north and east of Willcox. There were 9 campers at this event and there were 50 people at the cookout.  The Divan was represented by the Pote, Chief Rabban, Ass’t Rabban, Oriental Guide and their Wives. The menu consisted of Mesquite Grilled Steaks, Dutch Oven Scalloped Potatoes, Corn on the Cob, Fire Roasted Jalapeno Peppers, and a Desert.  I must mention that the desert was made on site and consisted of Dutch Oven Homemade Peach Cobbler with Homemade Ice Cream. Ummmmmmmm GOOOOD !! Many thanks to Paul Lee, Donnie Wade, Jim Boaz, John James, Bob Coder, LeRoy Engdahl, Gene Kennedy, Luther McDougal, and Troy Garey and their Ladies for their work and expertise in putting together this great feast!! Finally Lee and Marte Jernigan deserve our THANKS for their efforts and being great hosts!!

With September arriving, it appears that everyone is busy with personal agendas!  By this, I allude to the fact that only two Campers were able to give a “possible maybe” to go to Mt Laguna in California for Al Bahr Shrine week.  This was canceled for lack of participation.  We also had scheduled a “Working” campout at the Cochise County Fair but due to a large local volunteer action, the President of the Shrine Club has plenty of help.  This shows that the Shrine Club is active and will man the Coca Cola Booth themselves this year. While we are disappointed in not being able to “go to the fair”, we are very happy that the Shriners in Douglas are active and will have fun at the Fair. Dick, you do not get the salsa again this year!!!  We have offered our help, if needed, next year (2006)!!

Finally, the Shrine activities for Rex Allen Days the 30th of September and the 1st and 2nd of October will be limited.  The Divan is going to the opening dedication of the Mexico City Shriners Hospital. The Shrine Club in Willcox is only planning to have a Golf Tournament on the 30th and no meeting.  Steve Seplack will be in Mexico City for the dedication so there will not be a cookout.  Thus, the only Shrine activity will be the parade.

Soooo at this time, the next campout will be the Halloween Campout at the end of October at Patagonia Lake with Boaz’s as wagon masters! The dates are 28th, 29th, and 30th of October.  Bring your Halloween decorations, costumes, and wood for the campfires.  Plans are going forward to make this a really great fun time for all campers in attendance.  Mark your calendars for a howling good time!!

It always helps if you let the wagon master know if you plan to be there.  Jim & Rita’s phone number is 886-7689.

The activities for the Patagonia campout will follow the usual format!  That is, Horsey Douvers on Friday and Potluck on Saturday.  It is also anticipated that a few hardy souls will go over the border shopping and have lunch.  Saturday a.m., the Engdahls will attempt to provide “Omelet’s in a bag” for breakfast.  Maybe LeRoy can get the timing right this time.  If you have bacon, sausage, rolls, toast, fruit, juice or other breakfast items to share, we can have a real feast!!

Please remember to bring wood for Campfires and Halloween decorations if you have them!!

The Stated Meeting is on September 12!!!
